WEKKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS!
Good Evening Glenn Band Students & Families,
Please stay safe and warm as we begin this week - it is going to be a cold couple of days and we hope everyone has been able to prepare for the event of freezing conditions.
This week we are preparing for "MegaBand" (required for all band students, including Gems) on Saturday. We are also beginning morning sectionals for the Wind Ensemble and morning rehearsals for the Gems, and we have some important fundraising & community events on the horizon (World's Finest Chocolate sale, Mattress Sale, and WGI Austin Super-Regional hosting). Please see below for more details pertaining to these events.
Listed below are important dates for the community to mark on your calendars. These dates were shared in last week's newsletter as well:

- Dairy Queen Spirit Night, Jan. 30th

"GPRs" (Glenn Personal Records)
GPRs are a way to track of progress that the Grizzly Band is making every week. We don't get a chance to tell you about the little "PRs" that are being set all the time in our band program, and these little details go a long way. After all, "excellence is in the details"!
GPRs this week:
Percussionist Logan Phipps to Participate w/ All-State Percussion Ensemble
- Earlier this week Logan Phipps, our 2024 All-State Percussionist, submitted recordings of his prepared Snare, Two-Mallet, Four-Mallet, and Timpani etudes. These recordings were heard along with all of the other percussion All-State students to determine their chair placement for the All-State ensembles, and based off of his recordings, Logan has chosen to be a member of the 2024 TMEA All-State Percussion Ensemble! Congratulations, Logan!
SECTIONALS & BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS - ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY
The Spring semester is a little bit different (and less busy) than the fall semester.
Each week students will typically have one required morning or afternoon sectional and one morning or afternoon rehearsals.
These sectionals & rehearsals are mandatory for the Wind Ensemble (Varsity) and Symphonic Winds (Non-Varsity) band students.
- Sectionals for Symphonic Winds: will begin this week (see the weekly schedule for details).
- Sectionals for Wind Ensemble: will begin next week (a separate email will be sent to Wind Ensemble families this week.)

GEMS NEWS
Coach's Corner
Hello Gems Families!
Last week, we started our audition process for the 2024-2025 Gems Cast! We currently have 18 candidates auditioning for the Gems! They are all doing an amazing job fostering a positive audition culture and working hard at mastering their choreography!
This week we have our final Audition Prep Class on Tues., Jan. 16th and our Final Audition on Fri., Jan. 19th. Please keep an eye out for any alternative plans for the Audition Prep Class in our Google Classroom in the event of inclement weather!
We will be participating with the rest of the full band program at MegaBand on Saturday. Please see more about this in the newsletter below. Any additional information specific to the Gems will be shared asap this week.
Reminder: morning rehearsals will start next week on Tuesday, January 23rd. Please see Mr. Fig's previous email for more information; any additional information for these rehearsals will be sent out by Coach this week if needed.
Keep an eye out for Sat., Jan 27th 9:30-11:30 AM for our hip hop choreography day with Mirezha Guevara. We have also booked dates for two more choreographers to come in - more info will be coming soon!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: MEGABAND 2024 - Jan. 20th (Mandatory Event)
MegaBand is nearly here! This is a mandatory event where ALL of our band students join up with our 8th graders to prepare a short concert together. New for 2024, we are thrilled to announce that the Gems will be joining us at MegaBand to make this a true Grizzly Band experience!
FINAL ITINERARY AS OF 1/8/24:
- 12:00 PM - Lunch/Q&A Time (8th Grade Parent Meeting in GHS Band Hall)
- 1:00 PM - Rehearsal
- 4:00 PM - Concert
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Mattress Fundraiser - Feb 17th
Are you in the market for a new mattress for either yourself or a family member? Then we have GREAT NEWS!
We are hosting a one-day mattress sale on February 17th. This is a great opportunity to treat yourself and family members to a new mattress while also supporting your very own Grizzly Band!

GRIZZLIES ON THE BEACH (Band Spring Trip) - April 18-21st
We haven't had a full-band spring trip in quite some time at GHS (since 2019, in fact). Our band students have earned some beach time!
Parents: this trip is a fun getaway for the kids where they will be staying in villas with a group of roommates. There is a lot of free time where the kids will be able to relax at the villas or on the beach! They will also be doing a lot of cooking at their villas as a group; this may sound scary but former students have had a great time on these kinds of trips. This is a favorite trip for other LISD bands and we're excited to finally offer this trip to our Grizzly Band!

The Grizzly Band is beach-bound in Port Aransas/Corpus Christi!!!
Students, it's time to relax and enjoy the beach in Port Aransas! This is going to be a fun time to unwind and spend time together after our UIL performances. We'll be spending 4 days and 3 nights at the El Constante beachside condos where you'll be staying in resort-style villas with a group of your band buds! Seniors, you will also be getting a special senior golf cart outing!

SAVE THE DATE: WGI @ GHS: March 1st-3rd
WGI is a MASSIVE event that we host every spring. This event takes ALL of our band community to make a success! Please save this weekend in your calendars; there is a need for everyone to help in some way (both students and parents).
Last year @ WGI, the Glenn Band utilized
- More than 130 Parent Volunteers
- Every band student (more than 120 volunteers shifts covered)
This year's show is EVEN BIGGER than last year, so we need EVERYONE to jump in to help! Don't worry, no experience is required. Mark your calendars now!
