Grizzly Band Heating Up

Grizzly Band Fans,

It's hard to believe that we're halfway through the third week of summer band, and the 2022-2023 school year is starting next week! The band has been doing excellent work and we can't wait for you to experience this year's show. If you're wondering when you can get a "first peek" of the show, come on out next Friday, August 19 for our debut performance on the Glenn football field - we're calling the performance "Friday Night Lights", and we'd love to see you there cheering on our performers!

Thursday Rehearsal (tomorrow, 8/11) ending early for Grizzly Camp

To make sure that all of our incoming Grizzly Band students have the opportunity to attend Grizzly Camp, we will be ending rehearsal tomorrow at 6:15pm.

GHS will open the doors for Grizzly Camp at 6:00pm, but the event begins at 6:30pm (in the main performance gym). Students will have plenty of time to get over to the gym to be a part of the evening after we dismiss.

Here is our schedule for next week - it is different than normal due to the first week of school:

• Monday, August 15 - Evening Rehearsal (5:00-8:00pm)
• Tuesday, August 16 - No rehearsal
• Wednesday, August 17 - First day of school (rehearsal 4:00-6:00pm)
• Thursday, August 18 - Rehearsal (4:00-7:00pm)
• Friday, August 19 - "Friday Night Lights" & Band Parent Kickoff Meeting (details below)

Our "normal" rehearsal schedule during the fall will be on Tuesdays (4-7pm), Wednesday (4-6pm), and Thursdays (4-7pm). Please check the calendar on glennband.org for updates and full schedules.

Friday Night Lights & Band Parent Kickoff Meeting - Friday, August 19

At 6:00pm on Friday 19, we'll be holding a Parent Kickoff Meeting while the band students have rehearsal out on the Glenn HS football field. We'll be holding a special "sneak peek" of our show for everyone at the end of our rehearsal - we hope you will join us "under the lights" to cheer on the Grizzly Band!

Parents, please attend this meeting for important start-of-year details and information from Mr. Fig and the Booster Board members. If you have questions about the upcoming year, this is a great time to get some of those questions answered. After the meeting feel free to head to the football field to watch rehearsal and find a good seat before our performance at around 8:15pm.

Students will be rehearsing on the main field from 6:00-8:15pm, and we'll end the night with a performance of "everything we know" in the 2022 show at that point - it will be at least 2/3 of our ENTIRE fall show!

Stadium Rehearsal Dates (CALENDAR UPDATES)

We've been lucky to secure three stadium rehearsals this season:

1. Thursday, September 22 @ Bible Stadium (Leander HS); 4:45-7:45pm
2. Thursday, October 20 @ Gupton Stadium (Vista Ridge HS); 4:45-7:45pm
3. Thursday, November 3 @ Bible Stadium (LHS); 4:45-7:45pm

*Transportation will not be provided - families, please arrange safe travel for all of our band students to make sure that they can get to our stadium rehearsal days safely and on time.

*URGENT REMINDER* Region Marching Contest Date

• This year's Region Marching Contest will be held on Tuesday, October 11, during an extended weekend (no school on Monday, 10/10 or Tuesday, 10/11).
  
  
• Attendance at this contest is MANDATORY - this will be a major grade for all students; missing this contest can result in severe consequences for the entire marching band. Even one missing student will impact the entire team (there is no "bench" in marching band).
  
  
• Please triple check this day - we are not in control of the date selected, and this is a major contest for the tradition and legacy of the Glenn Band.

CALENDAR ADDITION: Glenn Band approved to attend Area Marching Contest

After conversations with Mr. Howard (our exceptional new LISD Fine Arts Director), the Glenn Band has been approved to attend the Area Marching Contest in 2022 when we advance from the Region Marching Contest on Tuesday, 10/11.

Area Marching Contest Details

• When: Saturday, October 22
• Where: D.W. Rutledge Stadium, Converse, TX (900 S Seguin Rd, Converse, TX 78109)

• Q: If we do well at Area, will we advance to the State Contest this year?
• A: No - there is no State contest for 5A bands this year (only 6A).

We are excited to attend this contest for two reasons - first, to give our students an opportunity to compete at a high level with other outstanding bands in our Area. Second, adding this performance gives us a performance leading into BOA. Without this contest, we would have no contest for four weeks before BOA. This is the right choice to set our Grizzly Band up for success leading into BOA San Antonio!

Chopping, Building, Sewing, Growing - Thank You Volunteers

Before we wrap up, I cannot say THANK YOU deeply enough to all of our parent helpers & volunteers! Here are a few special thanks:

• Fruit Stand Parent Volunteers - our kids have been healthy, happy and hydrated thanks to your time and efforts. These fruit breaks have been essential to the kids pushing through the last hour of each morning rehearsal, and it's all thanks to you!
  
  
• Uniform Volunteers - We're on a mission to make the Glenn Band look better than ever this year, and that means lots of measuring and sewing from parents. This is a huge task that can always use more hands, and our kids will feel like superheroes on the field because of your amazing work!
  
  
• Prop Building - Our prop crew has been so organized and efficient that we have nearly 100% of our props finished before the end of summer band! This is the most prepared and organized prop crew I have ever seen. Thank you for your planning, measuring, measuring again, and constructing. We'll be moving just about the entire prop setup to the field tomorrow, before school even starts. Our kids are being set up to succeed earlier than ever thanks to you!
