Glenn Band News - Week of 11/27

News for 11/27 - 12/2

Hello Glenn Band Students & Families,

Welcome to this week's announcements! We hope everyone has had a restful Thanksgiving break. As we prepare to come back from break, our main focus will be on Region Band Auditions and Winter Concert preparation.

In the band classes we are preparing our winter concert music. Our winter program is titled "Around the Fireplace" and features a blend of holiday and traditional band music. The Wind Ensemble is preparing a piece called "Vesuvius", which is the most challenging December concert piece that we have ever attempted this early in the year.

Several of the band students are also preparing for Region Band Auditions, which take place this week! Additional information can be found below.

We are so excited to see everyone again and to get back to making music & preparing for our upcoming performances!

BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS - ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY

The following rehearsals are mandatory for the Wind Ensemble (Varsity) and Symphonic Winds (Non-Varsity) band students. Symphonic Band (Sub-Non-Varsity) band students will have full rehearsals during regular class time. Please mark your calendars to attend:

TMEA REGION BAND AUDITIONS - NOV. 30TH & DEC. 2ND

Region Band auditions are here! Both rounds of auditions will take place at Westlake High School. Remember that students will need to provide their own transportation for these auditions - traffic can get heavier heading to Westlake; please plan accordingly!

Phase one auditions will take place this Thursday, Nov. 30th. This audition is for larger instrument groups. Last year this included flutes, clarinets, alto saxes, trumpets, horns, tenor trombones, tubas, and percussion. Percussion will begin earlier in the day at 3:00 PM, and wind sections will begin at 6:00 PM.

The 5A Area Qualifying Auditions for all instruments (either Phase 2 or single-phase) will be on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at 2:00 PM.

We will be holding a mock audition for all Wind Ensemble students during classes this week:

  • Woodwinds Mock Audition - Tues, Nov. 28th (during class)
  • Brass Mock Audition - Weds, Nov. 29th (during class)

For additional details about Region Band Auditions, please click the informational document linked below. Good luck to all of our auditionees this week!

Get ready for an amazing Evening with the Arts!

Join us at Glenn High School for a night like no other. We're the only school in LISD offering such a fantastic showcase of our arts programs, featuring visual arts, band, choir, dance, and theater.

Several of our talented band student groups will be featured, including several small ensembles and our very own Glenn Wind Ensemble, who will be showcasing a piece from our December concert.

We are also going to present a special collaboration with other fine arts programs (including our Gems, and the GHS choir!) that you won't want to miss!

Best of all, admission is free! Help us share the joy of the arts with everyone. Save the date and spread the word!

GRIZZLIES ON THE BEACH (BAND SPRING TRIP) - APRIL 18TH-21ST; REGISTER NOW!

We haven't had a full-band spring trip in quite some time at GHS (since 2019, in fact). Our band students have earned some beach time!

Parents: this trip is a fun getaway for the kids where they will be staying in villas with a group of roommates. There is a lot of free time where the kids will be able to relax at the villas or on the beach! They will also be doing a lot of cooking at their villas as a group; this may sound scary but former students have had a great time on these kinds of trips. This is a favorite trip for other LISD bands and we're excited to finally offer this trip to our Grizzly Band!

Additional details for registering can be found below. Sign up today!

The Grizzly Band is beach-bound in Port Aransas/Corpus Christi!!!

Students, it's time to relax and enjoy the beach in Port Aransas! This is going to be a fun time to unwind and spend time together after our UIL performances. We'll be spending 4 days and 3 nights at the El Constante beachside condos where you'll be staying in resort-style villas with a group of your band buds! Seniors, you will also be getting a special senior golf cart outing!

Details & registration info can be found below - sign up now!

GEMS NEWS

The Gems Dance Company have begun an exciting weekly physical training program in collaboration with the GHS Athletics Department! Once a week, the Gems will train in the weight room during class utilizing free weights, weight machines, and calisthenics. This is an effort to train our dancers to be stronger, more resilient, and more knowledgeable with physical exercise and will supplement their dance training!

The Gems Dance Company has been invited as featured performers to open the GHS Talent Show on December 1st! The Gems are currently rehearsing a jazz routine to Kylie Minogue’s “Tension” to perform at the Talent Show. Additionally, our Gems Captain Juli Dohring will be performing a flag solo at the show! Please join us on December 1st at 7:00 PM to support the Gems, Juli, and the GHS Talent Show!
