This Week: Leadership Auditions, Banquet Tickets, Day of Percussion Concert!

It's a busy week for the Glenn Band program:

• Senior Scholarship Applications DUE: Application window closes on Monday. Please see the Booster Newsletter for more information on this.

• Leadership Auditions: Visual audition this Friday after school (wind players only). Wear athletic clothes and be ready to march! Video audition due on Wednesday, May 10th (wind & percussion candidates only).

• BAND BANQUET: Ticket sales end THIS FRIDAY. See below for more information about banquet. We hope to see you there!

• "Day of Percussion" Concert: This Saturday in the GHS Gym, 6:30pm. Free admission!

Glenn Band Inaugural "Young Artist Contest" Wrapup

We were so glad to host our first annual "Young Artist Contest" (YAC) last Thursday after school. The event ran smoothly and the students did a great job! We know this was a new event for the kids, and they rose to the challenge very well. Congratulations to all of the students for your preparation and performance!

Some students still have an outstanding balance for piano accompaniment. Please check on your status for this payment and have it turned in as soon as possible. If you have questions about these payments please contact Mr. Fig. Thank you!

Band Banquet Information

Please join us for the 2023 GHS Band Banquet on Monday, May 8, 2023, in the GHS Student Union. The dress is semi-formal. Dinner and presentation will begin at 7 pm. Tickets are $20 per person for Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and family members. Seniors are free! Also, children under 5 eat free, Ticket sales will close on 5/5/23.

Band Letter Jackets: Fitting on May 9th in Band Hall

This year we will be hosting our own Letter Jacket fittings on May 9th. Fittings will take place after school in the band hall.

We scheduled this fitting so that our students who recently received a division 2 or division 1 ranking at YAC can add those points to the letter jacket form. Some students may have earned their letter last week!

Students MUST complete this form and turn it in to Mr. Fig for approval. Copies of this form can be found in the band hall.

Letter jackets will be distributed in the fall during marching season.

Upcoming Performances - Mark Your Calendar!

Spring Camp, Evening w/t Arts, May Concert, and Graduation

• Spring Camp: May 15-17th, 5:00-8:00pm; includes all 2023-2024 band students.
• Marching Show Debut: May 17th, 7:30pm; in the GHS Gym
• Evening w/t Arts: May 20th, beginning at 6:00pm; includes Pit Orchestra students, Indoor Percussion, all Wind Ensemble, and Gems Dance Company. More information will be shared this week!
• May Concert: May 22nd, 6:00pm, for all band students!
• Graduation Band: All Wind Ensemble Students, plus selected Symphonic Band Students. More information will be announced from GHS soon and will be shared here.

Mr. Travis & 2023-2024

As you have probably heard, Mr. Travis will be leaving at the end of the year. It has been amazing to see our community welcome Mr. Travis to the Grizzly Band, and he will be missed! Mr. Travis will share more with everyone soon.

As we move forward, the GHS Band Staff and Administration are putting our full effort into finding the next great Associate Director for the Grizzly Band. I'm confident that we're going to find someone awesome just like how we found Mr. T!

REMINDER: Calendar for 2023-2024

At their January 26th meeting the LISD School Board approved the school calendar for the 2023-2024 academic year. You can find the calendar at the "Board Brief" listed here.

With this in mind, we have begun planning the dates and times for next summer and fall. These can be found on our Google Calendar at GlennBand.org. Please note that these dates and times may change and changes will be communicated to families and posted to the Google Calendar.

Summer Band 23-24 Overview

• DCI San Antonio Trip (details below): Saturday, July 22
• Leadership Training Camp (leaders only): Monday-Tuesday, July 24-25
• Summer Band Week 1 (FULL BAND): Wednesday-Friday, July 26-28
• Summer Band Week 2 (FULL BAND): Monday-Friday, July 31-August 4
• Summer Band Week 3 (FULL BAND): Monday-Friday, August 7-11
  
• Summer Band & First Week of School: Monday-Friday, August 14-18

**Some events, like Festival of Bands, rehearsal calendar, and stadium dates are still TBD from LISD. Some events may also be subject to change based on local contest calendars. I'm very confident in the above contest dates, please start planning now!

Summer Band Rehearsals & Contest Day Notes

As with all Texas high school bands, please plan for your student to be at all of the above events. Look ahead now for SAT and ACT dates, as well as for vacation planning. I'll be heading to my log cabin in Wisconsin in June for a while so that I can be back for summer band! Please begin planning your summer/fall calendars for travel and testing now - we are SO EXCITED for next year's marching season and a big part of our success is having 100% attendance!
